Adopted by the U.S. Army during the early 1940s, herringbone twill (HBT) was developed as a hard-wearing fabric suited to both combat and protective use, including defence against gas. Generally coming in a single olive drab tone, it offered effective camouflage while maintaining durability in the field.
The Trousers, Herringbone Twill underwent several minor revisions, much like the accompanying jacket, seen here.
The first pattern followed a chino-style trouser design. Buzz Rickson's have decided to faithfully reproduce the later patterns, where the silhouette changed significantly, introducing large side cargo pockets with gussets and flap closures, one of the most identifiable pairs of US Army Trousers. A prominent gas flap was also added to the inside of the front fly, which led to the label being marked “SPECIAL.” The trousers are secured with black-painted metal 13-star buttons, consistent with the jacket.
