The Works Progress Administration (WPA) was a key New Deal agency active from 1935 to 1943, providing employment to over 8.5 million Americans during the Great Depression. It supported large-scale infrastructure and cultural projects, including roads, schools, hospitals, and arts programs - before being phased out as World War II expanded industrial employment.

The WPA produced durable workwear for blue-collar workers through government-run sewing rooms, with garments tagged “Made by WPA Sewing Rooms, Not to Be Sold.” Seamstresses took pride in their craft, often joking that WPA stood for “We Patch Anything”, repairing and repurposing military garments into functional new designs. Drawing heavily from military workwear, WPA pieces featured practical adaptations and distinctive lock-stitch construction.
