The A-1 flight jacket revolutionised not only aviation clothing, but jacket design as a whole. This new style of lightweight “windcheater,” cut to the waist and incorporating knitted components, went on to influence not only its immediate successor, the A-2, but also countless sports jackets following its introduction in the 1920s.
Most A-1 jackets were made from capeskin, a soft and lightweight sheepskin leather chosen for its windproof qualities and comfort. However, it ultimately proved impractical for the harsh conditions of combat. Only a small number of A-1s were produced in horsehide, and surviving examples have since achieved an almost mythical status among collectors.
This jacket is made in Japan using Buzz Rickson's 'Bronco' horsehide a veg (wood bark) tanned, hand painted aniline-dyed Italian horse-hide which has a superb depth of colour and variation of tones, which will age individually and uniquely.
