The polished body is cast into a horseshoe shape, a symbol of luck with pretty obscure origins. General consensus is that the horseshoe started to represent luck around the 8th century as a symbol to ward off bad omens such as the curse of the evil eye.
At the centre of the face are nine individual mother of pearl stones, set within a rough finished channel.
